Chiropractic Treatment and Infertility
Chiropractic care is a safe and natural approach to enhancing the body’s ability to function properly. What many people do not realize is how vast the applications of chiropractic care can be.
Chiropractic care can help women dealing with infertility.
Infertility is a couple’s inability to become pregnant after one year of trying. Research has indicated that the root of infertility problem is a combination of ovulation dysfunction, fallopian tube problems or other pelvic and hormonal problems.
Chiropractors promote health and wellness from an inside-out approach. They encourage healthy nutrition, active lifestyles, and stress relief through a variety of therapies. Many of these factors can directly affect one’s ability to conceive.
Can Chiropractic Care Help Me Get Pregnant?
Chiropractic care is related to pregnancy because of the nerves that run through the spine and ultimately extend to the female reproductive system.
Any blocked or pinched nerves can result in spinal misalignment. So when the nerves involved in the reproductive system are blocked or functioning improperly it could result in a hormone imbalance or other conditions that can lead to infertility.
Spinal movement contributes to the proper flow of cerebrospinal fluid. If anything restricts this movement it can alter the flow and impact of the hypothalamus and/or the pituitary gland.
These glands are responsible for reproducing the hormones vital to reproductive function.
Chiropractic Realignment and Spinal Manipulation
Misalignment of the spine can have far-reaching effects on the numerous glands and organs that contribute to a healthy reproductive system.
Since the nerves that innervate reproductive organs begin in the lower back, chiropractic spinal manipulation works by correcting alignment problems, improving bodily function, and enhancing your natural ability to heal.
Another benefit of regular chiropractic care is that it can improve your breathing, blood vessel dilation, and digestion. All of which can potentially help a fertilized egg into fallopian tubes.
If one’s pelvis is out of line it can create pressure and cause stress on reproductive organs. The pelvis helps carry vital neurologic messages to organs and systems involved in reproduction, blood flow, and hormonal functions. It does so along with the tailbone and lumbar spine.
Correcting misalignment will help your body restore healthy coordination of these systems.
The Role of the Nervous System
The nervous system is the master control system to all the body systems, and this includes the reproductive system.
Since the spine is what connects the nervous system to the rest of the body, keeping your spine aligned helps the entire body work more effectively.
Many times women who start seeing a chiropractor for spinal adjustments for other concerns outside of pregnancy will notice that they became pregnant over the same period of time as they received treatment. This was a major finding of a three-part series of case studies published in 2003 by the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research (JVSR). Overall, the study observed a correlation between women receiving chiropractic care and increased fertility.
1 in 8 couples (or 12% of married women) has trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy. (2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth, CDC). About 85-90% of infertility cases are treated with drug therapy or surgical procedures. Of those cases, fewer than 3% need advanced reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization.
Moving Forward: Consulting a Chiropractor
If you have not thought about seeing a chiropractor for challenges with conceiving, then you may want to reconsider.
For most chiropractors, investing in the fertility and wellness of women who are pregnant or trying to conceive is actually a routine matter. A chiropractor can inform you about the natural treatments that chiropractic care can offer.
Chiropractic care can be useful in conjunction with other accepted approaches to resolving infertility and has shown to greatly improve the chances of in vitro fertilization. Before resorting to drugs or surgery, sit down with a chiropractor. There are many concerns about the safety of the treatments that conventional medicine offers.
