What is TMJ?

TMJ, also known as the temporomandibular joint, is a hinge joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. You have two — one on each side of your jaw.

TMJ disorders occur when the joint is damaged or aggravated by injury, arthritis, or tension in the jaw. Genetics has also been shown to play a role in the development of TMJ disorders.

Symptoms

Jaw pain is the primary symptom of a TMJ disorder. Some other common symptoms may include:

  • Tenderness in the jaw
  • Pain in one or both joints
  • Pain or aching around the ears
  • Pain while chewing
  • Facial pain
  • Locked jaw

What Causes TMJ?

TMJ disorders can occur when there is an issue with the bone, cartilage or disc surrounding the TMJ. Movement of the disc or damage to the cartilage or joint (from an injury or arthritis) can cause a disorder to develop.

Some other causes and risk factors for TMJ disorders include:

  • Injury
  • Genetics
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Long-term jaw grinding
  • Long-term teeth clenching
  • Connective tissue diseases
