Common Sports Injuries
As an athlete, the numerous demands of participating in a sport such as running, jumping, and tackling can put your body through more than usual. These activities can result in painful tears, sprains, and strains. Sports injuries usually occur in someone who is just taking up sports as a form of activity, doesn’t use proper safety equipment, or becomes overzealous about the exercise regimen.
Participation in sports or exercises is important in maintaining your health, and injuries are unfortunately all too common during the process. The more commonly injured areas of the body from sports participation are the ankles, knees, shoulders, elbows, and spine. Below are some of the most common sports injuries we treat with chiropractic care.
Strains & Sprains
Strains and sprains are the most common sports injury, occurring fairly easy and in almost any type of physical activity. Sprains and strains occur when ligament tears or is overstretched and most common in the wrists, ankles, or knees. Swelling, inflammation, and bruising is likely to appear in the area of the sprain or strain.
Stress Fractures
Stress fractures occur when there is repeated stress on a bone over time, which is likely to occur in athletes. Fractures, or more commonly referred to as a broken bone, are a one-time injury to the bone that can also occur in athletes. A stress fracture occurs most of the time in the legs or feet from sports that cause repetitive impacts, such as running or jumping sport.
Knee Injuries
Knee-related injuries and problems are extremely common among athletes and former athletes. Runners knee, iliotibial band syndrome, and tendonitis are the most common and mild form of athletic knee injuries. Severe injuries can happen very easily, with a twist, turn, or improper landing during a sport. Severe injuries involve damage or bruising to cartilage or ligaments. The four major ligaments that are commonly injured are the PCL, MCL, ACL, and LCL.
Shin Splints
Shin Splints are an overuse injury, caused by micro-fractures on the front surface of the tibia (shin bone). This painful feeling in your shins occurs most often in runners or other athletes (especially those running on hard surfaces) during and / or after performing. The pain occurs usually at the front, outside part of the lower leg, but can also occur in the foot and ankle. Failing to warm up or stretch, improper running techniques, poor running shoes, or having “flat feet” can all contribute to shin splints.
Tendinosis
Tendinosis is a common overuse syndrome, caused by tendons becoming inflamed from repetitive use. Tennis elbow (tendons affected on outside of the elbow), golfers elbow (tendons affected on the inside of elbow), and rotator cuff tendinitis (rotator cuff becomes inflamed) are all common forms of athletic tendinosis that can result in pain and dysfunction and can affect your performance drastically.
