What is a Slipped Disc?
A “disc” refers to the rubbery cushion-like structure located between the bones, or vertebrae, on the spine.
A slipped disc (also known as a herniated or ruptured disc), refers to when one of the discs in the spine moves out of place, often causing nerve pain surrounding the affected area.
Slipped discs most commonly occur in the lower back, although they can also occur anywhere within the spine.
Symptoms
It is possible not to experience any noticeable symptoms from a slipped disc. However, most people feel pain in the area. Some additional symptoms of a slipped disc include:
- Pain in the affected area
- Pain that travels to the arms, legs or buttock
- Shooting pain
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Weakness
What Causes Back Pain?
Slipped discs can be caused by aging and general wear and tear. Lifting heavy objects and using improper lifting techniques may contribute to a slipped disc.
Older people, people who have a physically demanding job, and people who are obese have an increased chance of developing a slipped disc.
