So many of us underestimate or do not understand the link between the mind and the body. Anxiety disorders affect more than 40 million adults in the United States alone, and it’s time that we take a closer look at the nature of these disorders and the true connection between the mind and the body.
What causes anxiety and depression?
Anxiety and depression are complex conditions with no single identifiable cause. They are developed as a result of many factors and produce feelings of hopelessness, agitation, and uncontrollable fear which result in episodes of panic. Research has shown that there is a genetic component to these illnesses; however, a great contributor to these illnesses is stress and difficult life circumstances.
Emotions are a powerful thing, and while brain chemistry is a component of these conditions, that’s not that only thing we should be paying attention to. Research has shown that there is little to no reason to prescribe medication for moderate depression or anxiety. It often times does not really work, and the side effects can be severe.
Instead of turning to prescription drugs and saying “how can we treat or cure the issue,” it is important to ask ourselves “what is the cause and how can I prevent depression and anxiety in the first place?”
Chiropractic Care for Depression and Anxiety
The spine and neck are like the nerve highway of your body. When these components are aligned, it jump starts everything else. Any interruption on the spine and its flow could have an effect on mood. Tension headaches, stiff neck, and back pain (all things related to the spine) are common when it comes to mental illnesses. It is very common that people will experience both.
Chiropractic care helps with anxiety in a few ways. By feeling relief in your body from the effects of stress and tension, your mind will follow. Additionally, chiropractic care can help with depression and anxiety by addressing the stressors that are causing the neurological imbalance which leads to a disruption of endocrine function. For example, the adrenal gland helps in regulating blood sugar, producing hormones, balancing mineral levels, and assisting the body in dealing with stress. Chiropractors can perform tests to see if this gland is functioning properly and suggest whole food supplements to provide support to the adrenal gland.
